Relic of the 1964 Flood

Found this old car in the flood plain of the South Fork Eel River. Partially submerged in river sediments, this old car is slowly rusting into oblivion.

  1. I’ve seen this scene played out many, many times over the years. Of course, I’ve also seen many just pushed over the edge of the roadway up in the hills. Local fine artist Stock Schlueter has a few paintings of cars and trucks abandoned in flood plains. The last one I saw was up in a creek drainage off of Mountain View Road below the Kneeland Airport on the Eastern side of the ridge. It was about 100 feet UP the creek. How it got there is anyone’s guess.
